*Updated* My views in this post have been updated. Check out my newer post, “Part II,” for professionally calibrated settings for the GV47L.

–Begin old post.–

I’ve tried several combinations of suggested picture settings for GV47LF, and I’ve discovered that there isn’t much improvement in overall picture quality than the standard factory settings. Because different movies use different color palettes, enhancing the settings for one movie will end up having that same color look overblown in another. I leave the picture on “standard.” Only the adjustment of the backlighting has visible improvement on the picture.

There is only one way to improve the appearance of the black levels for the GV47LF, and that is to turn down the backlighting. In CNET’s suggested dark room settings for the GV47LF, they advise you to turn down the backlighting to zero. For me, a setting of zero makes the picture look too dark, dulling what should be vivid colors. In a completely dark room, I find a setting of 40 works best, compromising between blackness and bright colors. A backlighting setting of 60 should be fine for all but the brightest lighting (direct sunlight). I also agree with CNET’s advice to turn on the “warm” picture setting.
