AppleTV's H.264 codec is a newer, better compression algorithm than MPEG2 or DivX, so of course the bit rate will be lower for a comparable output. The proof is in the stunning quality of Apple.com's 1080p movie trailers of recent years. There is no need to "crank up" the constant quality slider of the AppleTV preset in Handbrake. You will end up with an M4V file that is as big, or bigger, than the original DVD source (which already suffers from MPEG-2 compression). My PS3 didn't come with HD cables either, and these companies should be applauded for thinking greener. I have about 50 USB cables and maybe 4 USB gadgets. If you need the cable, just go buy it.
